Republican Rep. Cory Gardner's new ad campaign released on Wednesday, which contrasts his father with Sen. Mark Udall's, has sparked criticism from Democrats who called the ad a personal attack and demanded it be pulled off air, the latest in the heated Colorado senate race.

Gardner's ad starts off with calling Udall "a nice guy" but adds that he would never be able to change the Senate since "he is the Senate."

He cited Udall's father, the late Morris Udall, who served congress for close to 30 years and ran for president. He also noted two of Udall's cousins who are current senators.

In contrast, the GOP representative said his father sells tractors just like his granddad.

The new ad posits a central argument in Gardner's campaign that his opponent, Udall, has been too much a part of Washington.

Shortly after the campaign spot was aired, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee lashed out and demanded the ad be pulled off air.

The Committee's statement attacked Gardner and claimed the campaign was merely a medium to detract attention from the damage he caused through his support of laws detrimental to women's health care rights.

It said it was "disgusting" that Gardner had personally attacked Udall's late father, adding that such tactics were beneath a candidate running for senate. The group called on the 40-year-old candidate to apologize to Udall and his family and demanded he stop airing the ad.

Udall also reacted to the campaign and criticized the congressman for attacking his father.

"This race should be about who can better represent the great state of Colorado, not personal attacks on our families," Udall said, adding that the attack on his father was uncalled for.

But Gardner's campaign adviser Chris Hansen hit back at Udall and called the senator's campaign the "nastiest" in the country.

"Now he is upset that we are calling him a nice guy?" he added.

He said Udall's 18 years in Washington has caused him to become so partisan that he won't even accept a compliment from a rival.
