Fashion Designer and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham will be the newest international goodwill ambassador of UNAIDS, a program of the United Nations that aims to combat the proliferation of HIV/AIDS through healthcare initiatives and education.

The announcement of Beckham's appointment was made last Thursday.

Beckham has been a supporter of similar campaigns for several decades now, but a recent trip to South Africa has prompted her to further step up and take on more responsibilities to struggle against the disease.

"It's taken me to get to 40 [years old] to realize I have a responsibility as a woman and as a mother," Beckham shared during her speech at the U.N. headquarters.

Beckham will be responsible in raising awareness about the program, focusing specifically on the transmission of the virus from mother to child.

According to the UNAIDS, in 2013, 240,000 infants were infected by HIV. In 2013, around one-third of pregnant women living with the virus didn't have access to medicine that can save their lives and their unborn children's lives.

However, if these mothers had access to antiretroviral drugs and proper healthcare and education, transmission can drop to below five percent.

Although the performer admitted that she isn't an expert on AIDS or HIV in Africa, she intends to be.

According to Beckham "I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know everything right now, I don't. I'm learning."

Although she has a lot to learn, the program's executive director, Michel Sidibé, shared that Beckham's popularity will certainly help their cause.

"I dream of a generation free from HIV and I know that Victoria's support will help us to achieve this shared goal. Her creativity, innovation and outreach will amplify our efforts and bring us one important step closer towards ending the AIDS epidemic," Sidibé shared.
