The European team wins has won their 40th Ryder Cup, retaining against the United States.

Coming into the final day, Europe led 10 points to 6. Single matches were played throughout the final day of the tournament, with a one-on-one matchup over all 18 holes.

Europe only needed to win four single matches to win, as a tie in the final tally would return the cup to the winners of the previous Ryder Cup tournament. If the team reaches 14.5 points, they definitely win the competition.

The situation mirrored the previous Ryder Cup, with U.S. trailing Europe with the same score. U.S. captain Tom Watson wanted to get revenge for last year's loss.

Rory Mcllroy won the first match against Rickie Fowler, five holes up with four to go (5&4), while fellow Brit Graeme McDowell returned from three holes down and took out Jordan Spieth, 2&1.

Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson played 16 holes, with Watson losing 4 and 2.

All 18 holes were played as Justin Rose came back from four down against Hunter Mahan to snatch a half point for Europe. This brought their tally to 13.5, with Europe needing only one point to conclusively retain the Ryder's Cup.

The last point came from 38-year old Welsh rookie Jamie Donaldson, as he beat Keegan Bradley, 4&2.

This is the third Ryder Cup that Europe has won in a row. The last win of U.S. came six years ago in 2008. Prior to that, their last win was in 1999.

Europe has won eight Ryder Cup's out of the past 10 against the U.S.
