Viewers were expecting to be gasping and grieving over the death of a major character in "The Simpsons" as people involved with the show promised an explosive season premiere. However, some fans were disappointed that the show began with a whimper instead of a boom.

While others speculated that Krusty the Clown would be killed off, other viewers believed that Sideshow Bob was going to meet his demise, the producers of the animated series opted to kill off Rabbi Hyman Krustofski, Krusty's father, instead.

The good rabbi was initially estranged from his son who decided to be a clown despite his objections. The two reunited later on through the help of the Simpson kids.

However, executive producer Al Jean did say in July that they were surprised people became so affected by the announcement that a character was going to bite the dust. He did warn viewers to temper their expectations amidst guessing games over who was going to die.

Although Rabbi Krustofski was a beloved and pivotal character, he only really appeared in six previous episodes of the show.

Users such as @TheBrianMo tweeted, "@TheSimpsons Seriously? The Rabbi? That's it? That was so weak it makes me want to change the channel! #SMH BOOOOO #TheSimpsons".

But then again, the death of the Rabbi does tug at the heartstrings like most parent-child storylines in the series.

We look back at those times that Homer would try time and time again to bond with his much-smarter, vegetarian daughter Lisa, at how Marge stood up for her mischievous son Bart and, how parents in the show, no matter how dysfunctional they are, always had the best intentions for their children.

The Rabbi might not have been the major character that was expected to go, he will still surely be missed - especially by his son Krusty.
