Italian Roberta Vinci upset fifth seeded Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep advanced to the third round of the China Open in Beijing on Tuesday.

The Rogers Cup champion Radwanska seems to be in a downward spiral as she exited early in five WTA events including her opening matchup against Vinci 6-4 6-4 at the National Tennis Center.

The 31-year-old Vinci will next face 12th seeded Ekaterina Makarova in the third round who won her match against Slovenian qualifier Polona Hercog in two sets 7-5 6-0.

With China's Li Na's retirement, Makarova is now in 10th place in the list and stands a chance of making it in the WTA Tour Finals in Singapore if Radwanska, currently 6th, continues her slump and another top player falls short of their contention.

In another second round matchup, second seed Simona Halep won a two set matchup against wild card entry Zhu Lin of China 7-5 6-4.

Halep, 23, broke Lin once in both sets to setup a meeting against Andrea Petkovic of Germany who won her match against American Madison Keys also in two straight sets 6-2 6-3.

Halep is one of four players already qualified for the year-ending event in Singapore along with World No. 1 Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and U.S. Open Champion Petra Kvitova.

Sharapova also saw action on Tuesday against up and coming Ukrainian star Elina Svitolina whom she demolished in two sets 6-2 6-2.

The French Open champion was faced with nine break points but saved seven of them to make her way to the third round.

The Russian now awaits the winner of the matchup between 14th seed Flavia Pennetta and Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.

Also seeing action in the second round on Tuesday is 18-time Grand Slam champion Serena and her sister Venus who will go up against Bulgarian qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova and Caroline Garcia of France respectively.
