"Tetris" To Be A Live-Action Sci-Fi Movie

Tetris Co. and Threshold Entertainment just announced that the classic 1980's video game "Tetris" will be turned into a live-action sci-fi movie.

During the 1990s, Threshold adapted the fighting game "Mortal Combat" into film twice. However, unlike "Mortal Combat", the falling blocks game doesn't exactly have a narrative attached to it. What the game does have is its familiarity amongst gamers and non-gamers alike - and that seems to be good enough for Threshold.

The production company promises that the "Tetris" movie will be a "sci-fi epic".

Henk Rogers, managing director of The Tetris Company, shared that their company is extremely excited to see the game on a new and much bigger medium, sharing that in the new universe created by Threshold, people will find out that Tetris is much more than "clearing lines".

Thereshold's chief executive Larry Kasanoff stated that fans and potential viewers shouldn't expect the movie to be some sort of cartoony, comedic flick. "This isn't a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We're not giving feet to the geometric shapes," he explained.

Kasanoff shared that "brands are the new stars of Hollywood". His reasoning is clearly evident in blockbuster hits such as "The Lego Movie", "Transformers" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles".

The executive guaranteed that they have a compelling story for the movie that will make "Tetris" even bigger than it already is.

Last June 6th, "Tetris" celebrated its 30th anniversary and, programmer Alexey Pajitnov discussed why the seemingly simple game has continued to have a strong foothold amongst the gaming and non-gaming community.

Pajitnov stated that people are more inclined to remember the completed simple tasks than complicated ones.

According to the programmer, "Tetris does this wonderfully. It presents a world of perpetual uncompleted tasks.... It involves us in a compulsive loop of completing and generating new tasks and that keeps us endlessly playing."
