In a statement released by the Ministry of Defense, it said the attacks were "successful"

The RAF planes were "tasked to assist Kurdish troops" who were being attacked by IS militants in northern Iraq, according to the ministry.

The jets were able to identify the rebel's heavy weapon position that were attacking the Kurdish forces.

Kurdish sources revealed that the RAF airstrikes helped Syrian and Iraqi troops reclaim an "important border crossing" at Rabia, according to BBC.

The insurgents' position was hit by a Paveway IV guided bomb, while the armored vehicle was bombed using a Brimstone missile.

Since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the Tuesday attack has been the first time the British has launched airstrikes in the country.

The bombing came on the eve of Prime Minister David Cameron's speech at Birmingham, addressing the Conservative Party.

The RAF Tornado GR4 has Paveway bombs, Brimstone missiles and a targeting pod called Litening III, designed by Israel, and is capable of showing the infrared images of its targets.

On Friday, after the Commons approved the proposed military action, the Tornados were sent to conduct armed patrols, but they have been on a reconnaissance mission over Iraq for over six weeks already.

According to United Kingdom Defense Secretary Michael Fallon, the armed patrols could go on for years.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond said earlier that Britain would not act recklessly in its airstrikes.

According to Hammond, every attack is well studied and would only target the Islamic State militants to avoid hitting civilians.

On Friday, the Parliament voted for U.K. to launch airstrikes against te insurgents, with 524 to 43 in favor of the attacks.
