Li Na

Li Na's farewell ceremony was held on Tuesday night at China Open in Beijing. This was the first time to say good-bye to fans face to face after Li's recent announcement of her retirement on Weibo on Sept. 19.

At the night, the flashlights made by cellphones of audiences', all Li's fans actually, shined the stadium. They shouted "Li Na, We Love You" and "Li Na! Come On!" to welcome and support Li.

Li in black walked out to the center of the China Open's state-of-the-art Diamond Court with special guests including WTA chairman and CEO Stacy Allster, ATP World Tour star Rafael Nadal, and her good friend Petra Kvitova.

After opening remarks from Chinese dignitaries, Allaster held off the tears as she said goodbye on behalf of the organization. "You are the player of this decade who has made the most impact and growth on women's tennis," she said. "And I know for certain your legacy and your contributions to the WTA will last for decade not only in China, but around the Asia Pacific."

Kvitova made a heartfelt speech as well. "You have done so much for women's tennis," said Kvitova. "Your story is full of inspiration. Being the first Asian to win a Grand Slam title changed our sport forever...The most important thing I want to say tonight: Thank you for being our opponent. Thank you for being our inspiration. Thank you for being our friend. We will miss you, Champ."

On the same day it was announced that Li was named an ambassador for the WTA Finals in Singapore. Li reminded everyone that she would still be around. "I'm really so happy I could be on the tennis tour," Li said, addressing her colleagues on court. "To know all of you as a friend. It's very tough to say goodbye. But I promise I can be around on the tour -- if not be an athlete on the tour -- but it's [to] come see all of you."

Li thanked her fans with her own video showing highlights of her moments with them. The fans shouted it loudly together "It is enough to have you in the world."

Li's husband, Jiang Shan, and Rafael Nadal eventually joined Li on court suprisingly. Nadal presented Li with a bouquet of flowers, and Jiang gave Li a warm hug.

Li walked through the whole court to farewell to her fans at the end.

Li Na, former Chinese professional tennis player, reached a career-best ranking of world No. 2 on the WTA Tour. She won nine WTA singles titles including two Grand Slam singles titles at the 2001 French Open and 2014 Australian Open.
