Color the Night Sky Turquoise on Oct. 8 Due to a Lunar Eclipse

On Wednesday, October 8, the full moon is set to turn into a coppery red color due to a lunar eclipse that will be seen all over the United States, even in light-polluted areas such as Las Vegas and New York.

According to Fred Espenak the resident eclipse expert of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the lunar eclipse this October "promises a stunning sight."

"I encourage everyone, especially families with curious children, to go out and enjoy the event," said Espenak in a press release.

The lunar eclipse will begin at 6:25 a.m. EDT on the east coast of North America. The moon will be seen hanging on the western horizon and there will be a red giant orb around the moon shortly before daybreak.

As for those on the west coast, the eclipse will be visible from 3:25 a.m. to 4:24 a.m. PDT.

Normally, observers will see a red fiery orb but this time, there will be a touch of turquoise. This is due the ozone layer.

University of Colorado scientist Richard Keen said that during a lunar eclipse, the light illuminating the moon passes through the stratosphere and causes the moon to appear red.

The light that passes through the upper stratosphere, however, penetrates the ozone layer making the red color a little lighter and creating a hue of blue. He added that the turquoise color will be well seen during the first and last minutes of the phenomenon.

So ready your binoculars, mark your calendars and set your alarms so as not to miss this wonderful event. This will be the second of the four lunar eclipses this year.
