Newly Discovered Ants in Brazil Copy Other Ants to Survive

The upright pooture of the C. Ampla Ant (left )is being copied by Mirror Ant Turtle (right) to easily steal food from them.

A new study published in The American Naturalist featured a new breed of Brazilian ants that can mimic another ant colony to get food.

For this ability, the ant specie was named Cephalotes Specularis or Mirror Turtle ants.

According to researchers, the ants could mimic the movements of the Crematogaster Ampla (C. Ampla) and can carefully dodge the host ant to avoid their scent.

They said that by mimicking the movements of the C. Ampla, the ants could easily access their food and other resources.

Scott Powell, one of the researchers involved in the study, said that when he first saw the species, he did a double take.

He said that after he turned away, he realized that a couple of ants that he just saw were not quite like the others.

Powell then decided to study the few peculiarities in the ants that mingled with the host ants, and then realized that they are Mirror Ants Ants and not C. Ampla.

After further study, researchers also found out that 89 percent in the host territory were invaded by parasites.

Researchers said that this is one of the most exciting scientific finds, and opens a vast array of opportunities to learn about the evolution of parasitism.

He said that this findings gives researcher a better understanding the reasons why species turn to parasitism to survive.
