An unnamed American journalist working for NBC News in Monrovia, Liberia has tested positive for Ebola virus on Thursday and will be sent back to the United States for treatment.

The 33-year-old cameraman first learned of his symptoms on Wednesday. He initially got down with slight fever and voluntarily quarantined himself immediately after, NBC reported.

On Thursday, he reported at the Doctors Without Borders treatment center for testing and was determined to be infected with the virus 12 hours later.

The patient will be sent back to the United States for treatment. The rest of the crew, meanwhile, will be placed under quarantine for 21 days in the U.S., "which is at the most conservative end of the spectrum of medical guidance," said NBC's Deborah Turness.

The network is coordinating with the family of the cameraman to transport him back via medevac. The U.S. Department of State is also reported to be helping in the arrangements, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported.

The man's identity was concealed upon the request of his family.

The freelance cameraman, who also doubles as a writer, is the fourth American to be diagnosed with Ebola since the outbreak begun more than six months ago. So far, the other three have been reported to have recovered from the virus.

A man travelling from Liberia this week also tested positive for Ebola and became the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States. He was immediately sent for quarantine to avoid spreading the disease.

The American journalist was hired Tuesday to serve as second cameraman for Dr. Nancy Snyderman, NBC News' chief correspondent in Liberia, according to the network.

The man's diagnosis came two days after the Liberian man was diagnosed with Ebola virus.

Several aid workers in West Africa have also fallen victim to the outbreak that has left 3,338 people dead in West Africa, according to WSJ.
