Women’s Volleyball World Championship: USA Demolishes Serbia; Brazil Defeats Russia to Advance to the Third Round

Team USA demolished Serbia in straight sets while Brazil won over Russia to advance to the third round of the FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship in Italy on Saturday.

USA maintained its unblemished record in Pool F of the tournament after crushing Serbia in three straight sets 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 at the PalaOlimpia Arena in Verona.

Kelly Murphy flew high for the Americans with 14 points followed by Kelsey Robinson with 12 points while Tijana Boskovic top scored for the Serbian squad with 15 points.

"It was a great match, you know Serbia is a great team, number 9 in the world," USA coach Karch Kiraly said. "It is very exciting to win against such a great team."

The United States will play Brazil next to determine who will come out on top of Pool F while Serbia will play Russia in a do-or-die matchup.

Two-time Olympic Gold medalists Brazil sealed its third round appearance after defeating the defending champions Russia in four sets 25-17, 25-27, 25-19, 27-25.

Brazil had problems during the fourth set as they were down 11-20 before coming back to seal the match and clinch them a spot at the final six.

Thaisa Menezes was all over the court to lift the Brazilian nationals past the Russian squad, contributing 22 points, 12 points from attacks, seven block points and three service aces.

Tatiana Kosheleva top scored Russia with 21 points followed by Nataliya Goncharova with 20 points.

"This is a very important victory because Russia is a very strong team and they are the champion," Brazil coach Jose Roberto Lages Guimaraes said. "We knew they were really good at attacking and is always hard playing against them."

Russia will face Serbia Sunday to determine who will advance to the next round along with USA and Brazil of their pool while China, Italy and the Dominican Republic will represent Pool E which starts on Wednesday.
