The Olympic swimmer was arrested for driving under the influence as well as excessive speed and crossing double lanes in the Baltimore tunnel, his second DUI arrest in almost 10 years. "While this has been an extremely difficult time for him, he is encouraged that this comprehensive program will help him focus on all of his life experiences and identify areas of need for long-term personal growth and development," said a spokesperson of Phelps.

In a separate statement, Phelps' agent Drew Johnson, said the swimmer will be checking himself into an in-patient program for six weeks but he did not say if Phelps would be receiving treatment for alcohol abuse.

Also, Former University of Michigan coach Jon Urbanchek, who has known Phelps since the swimmer was a child, said the reason he is seeking help is probably alcohol.

"It's a huge step for Michael, he recognizes that he needed some help. It's just a detour on the way, and he's going get back on track. This is when he needs support," he explained.

The swimmer has also released a statement saying "I recognize that this is not my first lapse in judgment, and I am extremely disappointed with myself. I'm going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself. Swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future."
