Michael Phelps Suspended Six Months by USA Swimming

U.S. Olympic champion Michael Phelps has been suspended by the USA Swimming for six months following his recent arrest on drunken driving charges on Monday.

"Membership in USA Swimming, and particularly at the National Team level, includes a clear obligation to adhere to our Code of Conduct," USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus said in a statement.

"Michael's conduct was serious and required significant consequences. Michael has publicly acknowledged the impact of his decisions, his accountability especially due to his stature in the sport and the steps necessary for self-improvement."

The 18-time Olympic Gold medalist was arrested and charged last week for driving under the influence (DUI), excessive speed and crossing double lane lines.

Phelps spent the night at a Casino in Baltimore and was stopped by police outside the Fort McHenry Tunnel for speeding. He was clocked going 84 mph at a 45-mph zone.

Police said that Phelps failed a series of sobriety tests and that his blood-alcohol level was 0.14 which is well above the state's legal limit of 0.08.

The 29-year-old Phelps apologized on Sunday and said that he will be seeking treatment. "I'm going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself," said Phelps.

The Olympian would not be able to participate in any USA Swimming-sanctioned events for six months and will not represent the country in the upcoming FINA World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia slated on August of next year.

Phelps will not be eligible to compete again until April 6, 2015 but is allowed to train with his North Baltimore Aquatic Club.

Phelps won a total of five medals, three golds and two silvers at the recent Pan Pacific Championships in Australia, his first international meet after collecting four gold medals at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London when he retired and officially returned to competition last April.
