The search in the southern Indian Ocean is expected cover 60,000 square kilometers. The team could spend about a year to track the wreckage. Malaysian authorities have contracted the anchor-handling vessel GO Phoenix to be a part of the mission along with two other ships.

Go Phoenix will be utilizing highly sensitive cameras to capture images from the ocean floor. These images will then be used to determine if it contained any indication of the missing airplane. The contracted vessel will operate 100 meters above the seabed and will use the sonar equipment “towfish”.

The vessel can contiinuously scour the search area for 12 days before it heads back to the Australian coast for supply and to refuel. Later this month, two other vessels from Dutch provider Fugro will join the mission.

Flight MH370 disappeared on March 8 with 239 people aboard. The search for the missing plane is one of the biggest international aviation search operations in history. The first two months of the multinational efforts had to temporarily stop after failing to find the plane's wreckage. The countries involved decided it was necessary to map the ocean floor before they could continue the search mission.

Australian Transport Safety Bureau Chief Commissioner Martin Dolan said every member of the search effort wants to locate the missing Malaysia Airline jet within a period of one year.
