Police confirmed that a four-year-old girl handed out packets of heroin to her friends at the Hickory Tree Child Care Center in Selbyville, Delaware on Monday, resulting in her mother being charged with maintaining a drug property.

The police as well as medics were called to the daycare on Monday morning when a staff member saw some of the kids holding small pieces of enclosed packets with white powder in them.

The packs were not opened by any of the students and were immediately confiscated by the teacher and presented to the police who later confirmed that they were indeed heroin.

Police reported that the girl unintentionally brought the packets as she just found them in a replacement backpack given to her by her mother. She told authorities that her own backpack had been destroyed by their family pet the night before.

Upon discovery the packets, the girl wanted to share what she thought were candies and started passing them out to her friends.

There was no specific number of children that the girl handed out the packets to but, according to the police, all of those who came in contact with the packets were taken to the hospital for precautionary measures and later released.

In the backpack, there were a total of 249 bags of heroin that weighed 3.735 grams altogether. All are now in custody of the police.

The mother, 30-year-old Ashley Tull, was not only charged with maintaining a drug property but also lost custody of her two daughters, ages 4 and 11, and her 9-year-old son. Her children are now in the guardianship of a relative and Tull is not allowed to come in contact with them as she has been served with a no contact order.

Tull was arrested, charged and prosecuted on the same day, however, she was released shortly after when she posted the US$6,000 bail.
