Apple's production of its 12.9-inch iPad has been delayed until next year, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The main reason for the delay is that Apple is trying to keep up with the overwhelming demand for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus since the devices' launch last September. Over 10 million units of the new iPhones were sold the first weekend.

"The output of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus remains unsatisfactory. It would be challenging for display makers to split resources and spend a few months to ramp up production for a new larger screen iPad now," said Apple.

Foxconn Technology Co Ltd, the company the makes iPhones and iPads, has 200,000 workers in China assembling the new iPhones and making other items like metal casings.

Reports said Foxconn is having a hard time meeting iPhone 6 demand. Foxconn Chairman Terry Guo is visiting the company's Zhengzhou, China factories to check on production.

It's rumored the larger tablet will be called the iPad Pro. This tablet will have a 12.9-inch liquid crystal display screen and will come with a 2048x1536 resolution screen resolution similar to the iPad Air.

Rumored also stated it will be powered by the Apple A8X SoC, which is the traditional chipset for iPad tablets.

Apple, Inc. is expected to unveil the new iPads at an event on October 16 and has already sent out invitations to media. The event will be held Apple's Cupertino, California corporate campus at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

The Cupertino-based company hasn't yet confirmed details of the event.
