Women’s Volleyball World Championship: USA Shocks World No. 1 Brazil; Advances to Finals

Team USA shocked World No. 1 Brazil 3-0 and advanced to the finals of the FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship in Milan, Italy on Saturday.

The undefeated Brazilians were a mess in the first set as the Americans, led by Kimberly Hill and Kelly Murphy had totally misled Brazilian blockers with their plays to easily take the set at 25-18.

It was totally different in the second set as Brazil went head-to-head with the United States, fighting for every point with veteran Fernanda Rodrigues leading the charge to send the set into overtime at 24-all but the unsung hero for team USA, Jordan Quinn Larson-Burbach flew high over the net to deliver the final blow to take the set and lead 2-0.

By the time the third set started, the Brazilians looked abysmal and even though Sheilla Castro De Paula and Thaisa Menezes were penetrating their attacks against the American blocks, USA has an answer with their own fury of kills that eventually led to one of the major upsets in the tournament.

USA shut out Brazil, their first and only loss in the tournament, 25-18, 29-27, 25-20.

"It is always an honor to share the court with the Brazilian team," USA coach Karch Kiraly said. "They are a legendary team having won the last two Olympic gold medals. Tonight we had a good plan and we executed it. We have a lot of work still to be done."

Larson-Burbach led the Americans with 15 points followed by Murphy and Hill who contributed 13 points each while Rodrigues top scored for the Brazilian side with 14 points.

The Americans has just avenged their 2012 London Olympics loss to the Brazilians for the Gold medal and they are on track for their first ever title at the tournament.

Team USA is now in the Gold Medal match against another unlikely finals candidate, China who won over host nation Italy.
