Two-time Olympic Gold medalist Yang Sun won the 1,500m freestyle event at the opening day of the Chinese National Swimming Championships in Huangshan on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old Yang had little competition in the meet as he finished the long distance event in 14 minutes 54.52 seconds, a mere 24 seconds ahead of second place Kecheng Wang of Hunan and Jintong Yang of Tianjin who finished third at 15:22.61.

"Since there is no close competition within the event, I swam very relaxed and smooth," Sun said. "I don't feel tired at all."

Sun broke the World Record of his favorite event, previously set by Grant Hackett in 2001, at the time of 14:34.14 a mere 0.42 seconds ahead set by the Australian.

Since there are not much competitions this year, Sun treats the event as a high-quality training session and will swim in all of his favorite events including the 200, 400 and 800m freestyle.

Sun became the first Chinese man in history to have won a Gold medal in the Olympics. He achieved the feat by winning the 400m freestyle in 3:40.14, the third fastest recorded time in history, just 0.07 seconds off the world record at the recent 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Meantime, another two-time Olympic champion Shiwen Ye placed third in the women's 200m butterfly with a time of 2:09.39, 1.15 seconds behind winner Shuang Li from Henan. Yilin Zhou of Hebei came in second at 2:08.58.

In the 18-year-old's defense, the event was her weakest and it was her first time competing using the butterfly stroke.

"It is my personal best since I never competed in this event before," said Ye.

Ye broke the world record of the 200m individual medley at the age of 16 in London with a time of 4:28.43, three seconds faster than the previous record held by Australian Stephane Rice who set the record at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
