Google, Inc. is testing the waters for a possible launch of the wireless version of Google Fiber, its ultrafast internet service that could make cable and fiber obsolete.

Reports say Google asked the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Monday to allow it to carry out a 180-day test on various wireless spectrums in California. These tests include rare wave frequencies capable of high-speed data transmission.

Google said it wants to launch its ultrafast Internet service to some 30 U.S. cities.

Wireless experts believe the move indicates Google's expansion into Internet connectivity. The technology Google seeks to test could provide the foundation for technologies that will do away with physical ground cable or fiber connections currently needed to provide Internet services directly into homes.

Google's new tech is bound to rattle Internet service providers since it offers a faster and cheaper means to deliver speedy wireless Internet service.

The possible extension of Google Fiber is seen as a way to more economically serve homes. The Google technology can be installed on a pole in a neighborhood, instead of building more expensive fiber infrastructure, according to Stephen Crowley, a consultant that monitors FCC filings.

The Internet giant already started expanding its efforts to deliver services such as Internet access to consumers. Last year, the company also closed deals to provide its wireless Internet service for free to 7,000 Starbucks cafes in America.

Google's application to conduct tests is heavily redacted for confidentiality. Google hinted the tests could provide valuable insights to improve its technology and enhance its business plans and strategy.

Google has refused to comment on the FCC filing.
