Tong's former girlfriend, the actress Barbara Yung, passed away in 1985 after committing a suicide. The event resulted to harsh public criticism on the actor for the manner he handled his relationship with the late actress.

Following her suicide, Tong left TVB which sparked rumors that the reason behind was, that he wanted to avoid more negativity after enduring stringent condemnation.

Tong also revealed that his fellow actor, Michael Miu, who recently starred in 'Line Walker,' protected him at the time his life was very problematic.   The actor felt sorry for Miu, who also  suffered the same circumstance as he also had to take the blame.

The former member of the highly successful TVB's Five Tigers clarified, his reason for leaving TVB at that time had nothing to do with the reports about Yung. "Being an artist lacks freedom sometimes," says Tong. "If there are negative reports, it's best not to read them. As a man, I can handle it. This was fate and I've survived it."

In the past years, the actor had been posting messages to commemorate his former flame on his Weibo account. He disclosed that he does not try to think about Yung as often, as it is unfair to his wife.

"There are many scenes in life, and while it is impossible to completely erase the past, it's important to still look at my current life," says the actor.
