Major hurricane Gonzalo has been forecasted to bring deadly storm surges in Bermuda.

The major hurricane  is reported to be the worst since Fabian hit the territory in 2003. Gonzalo has been classified a Category 4 storm and was spotted 314 kilometers south-southwest of Bermuda, according to a morning advisory from the US National Hurricane Center.

Fabian was the last major hurricane to hit the independent British territory in 2003. The Category 3 storm killed four people and was considered the worst to hit Bermuda since 1926.

Gonzalo is expected to move north and east and will not be a threat to the US. By weekend, the storm would hit Newfoundland, Canada. The advisory also said the remains of the storm may reach Scotland the following week.

A hurricane warning for the territory has also been posted by the Bermuda Weather Service. The forecast included waters rising to 11 to 12 meters. By evening, the eye of the storm is forecast to be near the island, the weather center said.

Miami hurricane specialist Robbie Berg said Bermuda will experience significant coastal flooding if Gonzalo passes the NHC track. Berg said Gonzalo might bring major damage similar to when Fabian struck Bermuda with a 10-foot storm surge.

Earlier this week, tropical storm Fay entered Bermuda and caused power outages affecting about 27,000 homes.

The Bermuda Department of Statistics and Registrar General reported a population of 65,038 in the territory as of 2010.

Michigan-based Weather Underground's Jeff Masters said buildings in Bermuda could withstand hurricane impacts. However, the damage incurred after Fay entered the territory on October 12 could multiply after Gonzalo enters Bermuda.

Meanwhile, NHC said Gonzalo may bring deadly storm surges and damaging winds later today. The weather service also said the storm may have a weak start but will hit a faster rate by evening.
