Kickstarter's 'Anonabox' Campaign Cancelled After Receiving Scam Accusations

Kickstarter has stopped its crowd-funding campaign for a Tor-based 'Anonabox' Internet router project because of controversies and scam accusations.

The cancellation of the project came after the privacy tool's massively successful crowd-funding campaign earlier this week.

The Anonabox Internet router was designed to help people anonymous when they start doing their online activities. The router's price is US$45 and runs on Tor, software which works on connecting on the internet anonymously.

Kickstarter's initial pledge is US$7,500 and they gained more than that. Within five days since its launching, The project received donations amounting to US$585,549 from nearly 9,000 donors.

The campaign for Anonabox device received accusations from Redditors saying that creator August Germar from Chico, California had misled consumers and told lies regarding the origins of the router. With that, backers started to pull out resulting in the decrease of donations.

On Friday, Kickstarter sent emails to its backers saying that the project has been cancelled. The email highlighted that it's against the company's rules to sell "purchased items" and claim to have made them yourself.

"When a project is suspended, the pledges are simply cancelled. It's important to note that on Kickstarter, even if a project has reached its goal, backers aren't charged until the project's funding period ends. So if a project is suspended during the funding period, no money ever changes hands," said Kickstarter spokesman.

In the past, Kickstarter has also stopped projects including a scam allegedly raising money for beef jerky.

The company also noted that project suspensions are permanent.
