3-Year-Old Brooklyn Girl Beaten to Death By Mother's Boyfriend

A three-year-old girl was beaten to death Saturday at a homeless shelter in Brooklyn by her mother's boyfriend after she accidentally soiled her pants, police officials confirmed.

The girl, identified as Jeida Torres, was found by police shortly after a 911 caller reported that there had been terrifying screams coming from the apartment at around 4 P.M. Jeida was then rushed to the Wyckoff Hospital but was pronounced dead, she reportedly suffered from injuries to her head and body as officials believe she was punched and choked during the attack.

Police also found Jeida's older brother, fiver-year-old Andrew, and authorities noted he had bruises on his body but believe that they were already several days old. Andrew was also sent to the hospital but is said to be in a stable condition.

The suspect, 20-year-old Kelsey Smith, fled the scene of the crime. Authorities noted that Smith already had 14 arrests on his record from 2008 to the present related to robbery, grand larceny, and gang assault. By Saturday evening, he had been taken into police custody after he was busted at the Queens border when the New York Police Department received tips regarding his possible whereabouts.

No charges have been filed yet against Smith as the joint investigation by the NYPD, the Administration for Children's Services, and the Department of Homeless Services is still ongoing.

Jeida's mother, Kimberly Torres, did not release any statement to the press but was seen with her children's grandfather crying in front of the building following the hearing about the attack and subsequent death. Kimberly reportedly left her two children with Smith when she went to work on Saturday.

According to neighbors, Kimberly and her boyfriend had a volatile relationship and could often be heard arguing. Witnesses claim that the two had been fighting incessantly for nearly two weeks leading up to the young girl's death.
