Prison Guard Avoids Jail After Sexually Assaulting Inmates, Selling Drugs

A former prison guard will reportedly avoid jail time after admitting multiple cases of sexual assault and selling drugs at the Kentucky Correctional Institute for women located in Pewee Valley.

James Johnson, a former 54-year-old prison guard, was initially under investigation in 2011 by the Kentucky State Police, accused of running a drug ring inside the prison while sexually assaulting dozens of inmates.

According to reports, Johnson was charged with one count of drug trafficking, 25 counts of second-degree sexual abuse and 50 counts of official misconduct in July of the same year of the initial investigation.

On Monday, Johnson agreed to make a plea deal with the court in an effort to avoid going to prison. By agreeing to a plea deal and admitting his charges, Johnson received a sentence of just seven years of probation and no jail time.

The court determined the length of his probation sentence by calculating two years for the sexual assault charges and five years for the drug trafficking charge.

Although the fact that Johnson did not receive any jail time is shocking to many, the prosecutors determined five years probation for one count of drug trafficking but only two years for multiple accounts of sexually abusing female inmates is even more shocking.

Johnson's case is seen by many critics as just another example of the lack of welfare for prisoners and the continuous special treatment officers receive in the justice system. Most recently, Latandra Ellington, an inmate at an institution in Florida, was beaten to death by a prison guard earlier this month.
