Not only did French Open finalist Simona Halep shock Serena Williams 6-0 6-2 but she also equaled the World No. 1's worst loss of her career at the WTA Finals in Singapore on Wednesday.

"Everything went very well for me today," Halep said. "I think it was the best match of my life."

The 18-time Grand Slam champion was plagued with unforced errors as she committed 18 in the first set while the 23-year-old Romanian just had one as Halep stormed through the set, broke Williams thrice, took the first set and went on to build a 2-0 lead in the second set.

Williams, 33, finally got in the scoreboard but it just delayed the inevitable as Halep broke the American once more to end the set and claim her first victory over a top 3 player in 65 minutes.

Halep also became the first Romanian in history to have beaten a World No. 1 player.

"I had a tough period before this tournament," Halep said. "I said I wanted to work on my serve, because in Beijing it didn't help me very much. I worked very hard every day, like 20 minutes just on my serve."

This is Williams' worst match, winning just two games, equaling her 1998 performance against South African Joannette Kruger where she lost in the quarterfinals of the IGA Classics in Oklahoma City 1-6 1-6. She was only 16 years old that time.

"Personally I've never seen her play like this. Ever," Williams said. "I've been practicing really, really well and hitting the ball really solid. Obviously I don't think I hit solid today, but she was taking balls early and playing really, really solid against me."

In this year's French Open, Williams also had a shocking loss against Garbine Muguruza of Spain where she was eliminated in the second round and just won four games 2-6 2-6.

Halep is now in top spot of Group Red's round-robin and will face her last opponent Ana Ivanovic on Friday who won against Eugenie Bouchard.
