The 17-time Grand Slam champion broke Muller twice in both sets to win the match in just 47 minutes.

"I am very happy with how the first round went here," Federer said. "It was totally different to Shanghai, when I saved five match points [versus Leonardo Mayer]. This time around, I was really in control from the get-go. I hope I can keep this level up."

The Swiss will now face Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan who crushed Polish Jerzy Janowicz 6-1 6-1 in the first round.

Bulgarian star Dimitrov had a difficult time with German teenager Alexander Zverev who startled the fifth seed in the first set as the wild card entry broke him twice to take the first set at 2-6.

Dimitrov, 23, bounced back in the second set as he broke Zverev twice after submitting a game to level the match at 1-all.

The momentum was clearly at the Bulgarian's side as he broke the 17-year-old German twice and saved two break points he faced to win the deciding set and the match 2-6 6-4 6-2 that lasted and hour and 45 minutes.

Dimitrov will now face Australian Vasek Pospisil in the second round who won a three set clash against Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-3 6(4)-7(7) 6-4.

The Bulgarian is competing for a spot in the year-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London and is currently in 11th place, 330 points behind eighth placer Andy Murray in the eight-man short list.
