School Shooting: Student Gunman, Victim Dead; Three Others Critically Wounded

A student at Marysville-Pilchuck High School north of Seattle killed himself and critically wounded at least three other people Friday. Said to have a "blank stare," the student later identified as freshman Jaylin Fryberg, shot up the school cafeteria with a 40-caliber Beretta handgun before turning the weapon on himself.

The high school was located at Marysville, Wash., a city of 60,000 people known for strawberry production about 35 miles north of Seattle. Four patents were transported to Providence Regional Medical Center in nearby Everett.

Three immediately were sent to operating rooms while one who was less seriously injured was taken to Harborview Medical Center at Seattle.

Marysville Police Commander Robb Lamoureux said police were confident the gunman acted alone. While the shooter hadn't been identified by police, students who knew him at the school described hom as a popular freshman who showed no outwards signs of trouble before the event.

The shooter "put bullets in the back" of several students, according to witness reports. He had been "perfectly fine the day before," said fellow student Austin Taylor, who had just finished eating at a cafeteria table next to the shooter's when the barrage began.

Taylor told KING-TV, the local NBC affiliate, he heard a series of pops and saw three kids fall from the table apparently dead.

The gunmen was calm during the cafeteria shooting, Taylor said, while Alan Perez, another student said he saw the shooter pull out a weapon. Perez said he dropped his skateboard and ran after seeing the flash from a small pistol.

A school fire alarm was sounded causing students to rush out of classrooms. They were sent back into classrooms by faculty and staff as the school went into lockdown mode.

As the scene was secured and the lone gunman declared dead, students were sent to a nearby church. Busses there took many students home while parents rushing to the scene also took home some kids.
