Nokia Stops Sale of Lumia 2520 due to Risk of Electric Shock

Nokia has stopped the sale of its first-ever tablet, the Lumia 2520, and warned customers worldwide about the potential risk of an electric shock from using its charger.

The Finnish company said the Lumia 2520's chargers came from a third party supplier and their defects were discovered during an internal quality control check.

Both the AC-300 wall chargers and travel chargers were found defective, practically rendering the Lumia 2520 useless without its power accessories.

Around 30,000 chargers are covered by the warning, Nokia announced on its website, adding that no actual electrocution incidents have been reported so far.

The defective chargers were sold in the United Kingdom, Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Finland and the United States.

Nokia said the risk of an electric shock could happen when the charger's plastic cover comes loose and users accidentally touch the separated parts while they are plugged into a live power socket.

In the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) that Nokia published on its website, the company did not make it clear if affected consumers would get a refund or replacement for the defective chargers.

It simply apologized for the inconvenience saying the company is working with its suppliers to minimize the inconvenience.

Technology experts believe that approximately 3,000 Lumia 2520 owners may be affected.

Nokia clarified that only the Lumia 2520 chargers post a safety risk and that its other products are fine.

Nokia was once the undisputed leader in the mobile phone industry until it was overtaken by Samsung and Apple a couple of years ago.

In 2013, Nokia reported losses amounting to US$ 1.08 billion.

Microsoft Corporation is set to buy Nokia's tablet and mobile phone business by the end of April.
