17 Senior Military Officers Pledge Allegiance to President Xi

A military newspaper has published the articles written by 17 senior military officers who expressed statement of allegiance to President Xi Jianping on Friday.

These articles were different from the essay that was collectively signed by principal officers on 2 April. This time, the officers who wrote the articles are deputy officers such as deputy commanders, assistants of directors of the Political Department and assistants of chief of the general staff.

Tong Chengyi, Beijing military region deputy political commissar and director of the Political Department, said President Xi has promoted the strong army dream to raise the officers' spirit and to further improve awareness.

Shenyang region deputy commander Wang Xixin said a qualified general must always be ready for battle.

Lanzhou deputy political commissar Miao Hua said military officers] must earnestly fulfill the mission of President Xi's "three guarantees".

Former vice president of Military Institute of Chemical Defense Xu Guangyu said it was the largest scale of pledging allegiance to the chairman of China's Central Military Commission for the past 30 years.

Xu indicated that the senior military officers pledging of allegiance was related to the anti-corruption inspection conducted by the military inspection team. It could also be related to the issue of military lay-off and the challenges posed by the comprehensive military reform.

In terms of reform resistance, some media outlets cited the example of former Central Military Commission Hu Jintao, who requested the military discipline inspection department to suspend Gu Junshan from his duties. The request, however, met resistance among the ranks, until a formal investigation was conducted.

For the long term and large scale anti-corruption action, some media said China is clearing the way for the military reform while other media believed that China is recovering the public's trust to the Chinese Communist Party.
