Third seeded wild card entry Andy Murray defeated Spaniard David Ferrer again for the second straight tournament but has another local hero to contend in Tommy Robredo at the finals of the Valencia Open 500 in Spain on Saturday.

The match started out sluggishly as both Murray and Ferrer felt each other out in the first set with both saving a break point but the Scot took advantage of another break point opportunity to take the set.

The second set was faster as both players were more aggressive and had exchanged breaks two consecutive times before the Scot ended up on top to win the set and match 6-4 7-5 that lasted two hours.

Britain's No. 1 and former tournament champion Murray will meet another local hero Tommy Robredo who will make his first finals appearance.

Murray is now the only player still alive in any ATP tournament that has a chance to gain more valuable points in the Race to London where he is currently in eighth place in the eight-man short list.

If the Scot wins, he will surpass Tomas Berdych and Kei Nishikori, and will take over 5th place while Ferrer is hanging on in 9th.

"After the US Open I was aware that I would need to win a lot of matches to try to reach the Tour Finals," Murray said. "So it was important for me to try and get as many matches as I can against the top players between now and the end of the year."

Robredo reached his first tournament finals by defeating Jeremy Chardy of France in a very close two set match 7(9)6(7) 7(7)-6(2) that lasted just over two hours.

The 32-year-old Spaniard reached a milestone during his victory as he won his 500th career match, placing him 7th in the active players list.

"It is only a number, but it is a special number," said Robredo. "If somebody told me I would win 500 matches at the beginning of my career, I'd take it. Well, I'm here. Now I should go for 600."
