California-based startup Yardarm Technologies, Inc. recently unveiled a new gun monitoring technology that lets law enforcement officers capture and store data using sensors.

Yardarm developed sensors to let police officers know the time and location of a gun, including the direction it was fired.

The Yardarm sensors also records in real time when officers take out their guns from their holsters.

Phil Wowak, Santa Cruz County Sheriff, said the new gun technology will allow the sheriff's office to monitor deputies and see if they're in trouble.

"That's the worst nightmare for any police officer in the field," Wowak said.

The technology uses the Internet to track locations. A sensor fits into the handle of a gun and connects to the officer's smartphone via Bluetooth connectivity.

"The officer simply inserts it into the back of the firearm, and now it's installed. They don't even know it's there anymore," said Jim Schaff, Yardarm's marketing vice president.

Yardarm incorporated the sensors into a system that notifies users via their phones if a gun has been moved from its place. The system doesn't allow officers to disable their guns remotely since Yardarm had abandoned that idea.

The company emphasizes its new technology isn't a smart gun; it's a police gunfire monitoring technology. The technology aims to improve police safety and awareness.

Yardarm is currently testing the sensors and hopes to develop the technology nationwide.
