Bruce gained popularity during the 1960s as part of the widely successful rock band, Cream. His musical approach to his bass had influenced other rock musicians for more than two generations.

The bassist and lead vocalist of Cream died at the age of 71 in Suffolk, England. His death was announced on his website while a representative confirmed the cause of his death to be liver disease. Bruce underwent a liver transplant several years ago.

Bruce was already a rock icon in the British rock and blues scene but gained popularity in the U.S. when he joined Clapton and Baker in forming Cream in 1966. Cream’s hits include “I Feel Free”, “White Room” and “Sunshine of Your Love”.

Bruce had a polished tenor voice that blended well with the instruments played by his colleagues. His adventurous take on his instruments, including song intros like “Badge”, became an important part of the band’s distinct sound.

Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters said Bruce is “probably the most musically gifted bass player who’s ever been.”

However, Cream’s success did not last long as they announced a split in 1968. The breakup was reportedly due to the friction between Bruce and drummer Baker. Cream released four albums with sales reaching about $35 million.

Soon after Cream was disbanded, Clapton and Baker joined up with Steve Winwood and Ric Grech to form Blind Faith, which didn't last any longer than Cream. Blind Faith announced a splitup after mounting one tour and launching one album.

In 1993, Cream became a part of the Rock and Roll Fame. In 2005, Cream was once again reunited for several concerts held in New York and London. The band also received a Grammy lifetime achievement award in 2006.
