Singapore Opens New Research Center to Strengthen Cyber Security

The Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) in Singapore, along with Singapore Technologies Electronics, is building a new research center that aims to improve the country's defense against cyber security attacks.

The new cyber security research center aims to protect new systems that will transform Singapore into a 'smart nation'.

The center will focus on research areas such as cyber forensics and mobile security.

"As we look to improve our technology and energy infrastructure, the growing interconnectivity and inter-dependency of these different systems means they could become prime targets for attacks," said Lim Chuan Poh, chairman of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research.

"Strengthening the security of these systems as they become more valuable to us is therefore another key area of focus," said Lim.

The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) said it intends to set-up thousands of sensors in the form of computer chips or surveillance cameras across Singapore by the end of 2015.

As part of the country's smart nation initiative, the installation of these sensors will support many government projects.

In addition to cyber security, the I2R also plans to collaborate with the Housing Board, among others, to develop storage systems for renewable energy.

"Singapore is the leading clean energy hub for the region and clean technology has been identified as a key growth area by the government as early as 2007," said Lim.

Last month, the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) opened a new cybercrime research center in the country. Interpol's digital center aims to support and protect member countries from cyber-attacks.
