Baby Wipes Company Recall Products for Possible Bacterial Contamination

Nutek Disposables, Inc. has initiated a recall of their baby wipes products because it may contain bacteria known to pose a risk to people with certain health problems, according to the Food & Drug Administration.

The Pennsylvania-based baby wipes manufacturer recall all 10 brands of baby wipes, including Cuties, Diapers.com, Femtex, Fred's, Kidgets, Member's Mark, Simply Right, Sunny Smiles, Tender Touch and Well Beginnings.

The company found the bacteria in some baby wipes packages distributed before October 21 to Walgreens, Sam's Club, Family Dollar, Fred's and Diapers.com.

"After receiving a small number of complaints of odor and discoloration, Nutek conducted microbial testing that showed the presence of a bacteria, called Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia), in some of these products.

"Soon after, on October 3, 2014 the company initiated a voluntary withdrawal of lots that had tested positive for the bacteria, as well as other baby wipes in the surrounding time frame. After some additional lots were tested, as a precautionary measure, Nutek believed it was a prudent decision to withdraw all its baby wipe products," said the FDA.

People with health problems like cystic fibrosis or chronic lung diseases that weaken the immune system are very prone to Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia), Nutek said in their official statement sent to the FDA.

FDA said consumers can return the baby wipes to the place where they were purchased and get a full refund.
