High-School Shooter Texted Victims to Meet at Cafeteria Before Opening Fire

Jayden Fryberg, the high-school student who opened fire at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Washington and left four people injured and one dead, reportedly texted his victims to meet him at the cafeteria for lunch prior to the incident, officials reported Monday.

According to witnesses and police officials, 14-year-old Fryberg walked into the cafeteria and started shooting at the table where two of his cousins and three of his close friend were sitting. He killed one of them and the four who survived suffered from bullet wounds to the head and are in critical and serious condition.

Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary said in a statement during a news conference that the shooter arranged the meeting via a text message and witnesses confirmed that after he opened fire on his friends and cousins, he turned the gun on himself.

A female first-year teacher named Megan Silberberger was said to have intervened in the attack when the shooter paused and was assumed to be re-loading his weapon. It was questioned whether Fryberg killed himself or he accidentally pulled the trigger while struggling with the said teacher. Witnesses, however, stated that the teacher did not touch Fryberg and it was impossible that he just accidentally shot himself.

Officials noted that they were able to retrieve the .40 caliber Berretta that the shooter used. It was purchased legally but it is not yet clear how the 14-year-old student obtained access to the weapon. Questions about gun policies and control have begun to surface as this is the latest school shooting in the United States.

Authorities have not yet pinpointed what Fryberg's motive was and as his family alleges there was no strain in the relationship between Fryberg and his cousins, they are still clueless as to what triggered him.

Fryberg and his family are prominent members of the Tulalip Indian Reservation and according to them the shooter was quite popular in their school and was a happy-go-lucky kid.
