Republican Gov. Scott Walker overtakes Democrat challenger Mary Burke by seven points in the final poll released Wednesday as one of the tightest gubernatorial races head to its uncertain end.

The Marquette University Law School survey indicated that likely voters are split 50-43 percent between the incumbent governor and his Republican opponent.

This comes at the heels of a Marquette poll released two weeks before indicating an even 47 percent split between the two gubernatorial candidates.

Walker celebrated his lead at a campaign rally in Eau Claire Wednesday, saying it is always better to register higher favorability in the polls.

"But in the end, the only poll that matters is the one we take next Tuesday," Walker said as quoted by Fox 11 online.

Speaking before the release of the poll, Burke said the race is going to be tight.

At the end of the day, it is about the people turning out to vote, she told supporters during a campaign stop at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

The lead comes as a dramatic surprise after recent polls have pitted both candidates in an essentially dead-heat race.

However, the final Marquette poll is more revealing as it indicates that among registered voters, Walker is only leading by one percentage point: 46 percent compared to Burke's 45 percent.

As was suggested by the Politico, the increase in Walker's lead is attributable to the surge of enthusiasm from Republican supporters.

Of those surveyed, 93 percent of the Republicans said they are voting compared to the 82 percent Democrat supporters who said they will show up at voting precincts.

Three-quarters of independent voters said they are likely to vote. Among them 52 percent are favoring Walker over the 32 percent who said they would pick Burke.

The Marquette poll was conducted from Oct. 23 to 26 among 1,164 voters who are unlikely to sit out the Wisconsin gubernatorial race on Nov. 4.
