The 31-year old actor, who plays the lead role in the film, explained that the most difficult part about shooting the film was being on location. Ruan said that they had been too far away from home for such a long time.

According to Ruan, the cast and crew of "Paradise in Service" spent around five months on the remote Kinmen Island.

"It made you so homesick," Ruan said. "You miss your bed, your family and everything familiar in your life."

The actor, who has just recovered from rapid muscle degradation, claimed that the experience had been so tough that there were times when he couldn't help but cry under his blanket at night.

When asked whom he missed the most while he was shooting on location, he stated that it was his girlfriend.  He explained that it would have been alright with him if he could talk to her on the phone, but connectivity in Kinmen Island was almost nil.

Ruan also stated that Doze Niu, the director of the film, banned relatives of the cast and crew to visit in order to create a sense of isolation which is one of the key themes of the film.

"Paradise in Service" features a story about a young Taiwanese conscript named Pao, played by Ruan, who lives in the era when China and Taiwan were in conflict with each other.

The soldier Pao later finds himself  posted to Sea Dragon, a soldier unit famous for receiving the toughest kind of military training held on Kinmen Island. His life becomes even more complicated when he starts falling in love with a prostitute who lives on the island.

The film, which also features Chen Jian Bin, Wan Qian and Chen Yi Han, will open in Singapore on November 6.
