Drones Flying Over French Nuclear Power Plants Sparks Investigation

An investigation by the French government is underway following multiple drones that have been spotted flying over its nuclear power plants.

A series of drones have been seen flying over seven different nuclear power plants within a two-week span around France. The first unmanned aerial vehicle was seen on Oct. 5, as multiple other sightings have been confirmed through Oct. 20.

According to reports, the aerial vehicles have not yet been unidentified, but are considered to be "commercial models" that can easily be purchased by the public.

Nuclear power is relied on for 75 percent of electricity in France. According to French law, no aircraft is able to legally fly within a three-mile radius around any of the country's 58 nuclear power plants.

Greenpeace, an environmental organization, was first speculated to be involved with the drones. The organization is already known for previously entering French nuclear power plants, as they used a paraglider to fly over one in 2012. However, Greenpeace has denied its involvement, claiming the organization is open about its activities.

"The overflights in question took place sometimes on the same day at four sites which are far apart from each other," Greenpeace said in a statement. "For example at Bugey, Gravelines, Chooz and Nogent-sur-Seine on 19 October - which proves it's a large-scale operation."

Because the drones are small commercial models, the Air Force doesn't consider them a threat, as they're not likely to cause any damage to the nuclear plants.

The French government however still has plans to investigate these drones in an effort to find out the reasoning behind them and to "neutralize them."
