Halloween Rained Cash on I-270 When Armored Car's Door Malfunctioned

I-270

An armored car ahead whose door malfunctions would surely cause some unexpected Halloween scare among motorists driving along Route 270 in Frederick, Maryland. But instead of causing havoc, it rained financial blessings on car owners after a bag filled with dollar bills flew out of the vehicle and released the cash into the air for excited drivers to collect.

Greg Shipley, a Maryland Police spokesman, said the bills were mostly $20, and it took a fire truck that switched open its emergency light to stop the drivers from chasing the money on air and on the busy roadway.

The incident happened at 8 a.m., but despite it being the morning rush hour, motorists parked their cars in the busy highway and scooped as much money as they could.

There is no estimate on how much many was inside the wayward bag or how much was collected by the happy early morning Halloween motorists, but according to LA Times, the police recovered only $200 from the money being delivered by the armored truck owned by GardaWorld International Protection Service.

Time reports that the defective lock was caused by the armored truck's previous collision with a dump truck.

Because only one woman with $1,160 heeded the authorities' call for motorists who got the windfall to return the money, Maryland police ordered detectives to review the surveillance camera footage to track the "lucky" money collectors who would opt to pocket the extra Halloween cash.

Shipley stressed, "It should have been pretty obvious to the individuals there ... with the truck just sitting on the side of the road that it's not really your money." Police warned that those who were caught by the CCTV grabbing the money and won't return the cash would face theft charges.
