Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko called an urgent meeting with his security chiefs in Kiev after news of the pro-Russian separatists' election over the weekend broke out, and deployed troops all over the country to defend the cities still under their control.

The rebels announced that they plan to attack more villages and cities they believe will be beneficial for their fight against the Ukrainian government.

The votes cast over the weekend signify that the rebels continue to violate the peace pact, which the leader of the rebels and Poreshenko agreed upon in the Minsk last September. The war between the government and the rebels resulted in the death of 400 people in the course of the seven-month long conflict.

Due to this, Poreshenko released a statement saying Ukraine remains firm in its peace plan but noted that his men, referring to the military, is ready to repel any attacks on their cities.

Ukrainian troops have been dispersed from the city of Mariupol to the city of Kharviv, reports say. These cities and those located between them are said to be still government-held and the troops are protecting these to avoid giving the separatists more power.

Poreshenko reportedly talked to his National Security and Defense Council, pressing that it is their responsibility and obligation as part of the Ukrainian State to not allow the spread of the war, which he referred to as a "cancerous tumor", and to blockade their territories.

It has not been made public how the Ukrainian military forces have prepared for the said blockade as they have been continuously defeated for the past months. They reportedly still do not have the right weapons and equipment to defend themselves from the separatists and from the Russian military troops sent by Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

According to North Atlantic Treaty Organization chief Jeans Stoltenberg, Russia is still training and arming the rebels. They also sent Special Forces to Ukraine despite Putin's claims that he has pulled out his troops.
