Emoji's New Faces Offer Racial Diversity

The guys that make Emojis have been criticized for only making graphics that are general and are not in any way specific. This has been resolved, however, as emojis can now be created according to the skin color of a user.

Emojis are those tiny images used to express whatever a person needs to without the need of using words. Basically, these are visual aids that help one express emotions or ideas.

According to an update reported by the Unicode Consortium, the group in charge of the emoji standards said they're on the verge of finally addressing the racial diversity of emojis long-demanded by fans.

Unicode said emoji characters were made to be generic but the color choices they've come up with, such as light-toned and dark-toned, can represent other groups or races of the human population.

They noted, however, that diverse emojis might be out by next year since they're still finalizing Unicode 8.0. By then, Unicode noted that five symbol modifiers, a tool that anyone can use to generate other untouched skin tones, will be available.

The six skin tones are based on the dermatological standard called "Fitzpatrick scale." The code will modify the existing emojis so that a character combined with the intended color will produce a certain ethnicity.

Basically, users can long-press a human emoji character so the color palette will pop out.

Apple and Google might possibly adapt the changes. Unicode said a lot of codes still need some fixing so expect the changes by mid-2015.
