Jay Leno Gets the Laughs as a Guest on 'The Tonight Show'

(Photo : Reuters) Nine months after stepping down as host of "The Tonight Show", Jay Leno returns as a guest, joining his successor Jimmy Fallon.

Jay Leno may be retired from late night hosting but the laughs were still there when he made his first appearance as a guest in "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon," a show on NBC that Leno hosted for more than two decades.

TV Viewers who remember Leno's brand of humour witnessed one more time his take on America's social issues from the NFL to Justin Bieber.

After the monologue, Leno sat at the couch reserved for guests, opposite Fallon where Leno once sat and ruled the late night airwaves.

When asked about how he was doing, Leno wittingly avoided answering Fallon and even gave out comedic punches teasing Fallon's performance as the new king of late night talk for NBC.

The last time Leno sat as a guest on "The Tonight Show" was some twenty years ago opposite the late Johnny Carson who introduced Leno as his successor on the program.

Leno revealed that if Fallon promised him that he would return to the show as a guest, all of his expenses will be covered by Fallon and the program.

The former host billed Fallon for a slice of pizza, a copy of the Cat Fancy Magazine and pay-per-view for three porn films Leno watched in his hotel.

A year after Leno retired from NBC, he is slated to return as a talk show host for a motor themed program on cable-based MSNBC in 2015.

Leno is known for his fancy for restoring old cars in his garage, a regular feature during his stint on "The Tonight Show."

Leno sat throughout the show and at times even overshadowed Fallon's interview with another guest, Lucy Liu, the star of the CBS series "Elementary."

Liu kidded Leno's antics saying, "This is your first time with Jimmy, but I was your first."

Fallon responded saying he was not familiar with "Elementary" because the only shows he gets to watch are NBC's, out of loyalty for the home network.

Leno cracked up the audience and said, "Well you have reason to be loyal."

Jay Leno will make a guest appearance on December 19 in CBS' "The Late Late Show with Craig Fergusson," the post programming feature of Leno's once bitter rival on the airwaves, "The Late Show with David Letterman."

Leno and Letterman were bitter contenders to inherit "The Tonight Show" from Johnny Carson but NBC chose Leno over Letterman who was then already hosting for NBC's "Late Night." Letterman moved to CBS with loud fanfare to start the network's late night talk fare.

Letterman is scheduled to retire from his show in 2015 and comedian Stephen Colbert was selected by CBS to go head-on against Fallon for the late night ratings.
