Prominent Bahamian Minister Among Nine Killed in Plane Crash

Prominent Bahamian Pastor and prolific author Myles Munroe, together with his wife and daughter, were among nine killed when an executive Lear jet crashed while approaching to land at the Grand Bahamas International Airport Sunday night.

Bahamas Department of Civil Aviation said the plane struck a crane at the Grand Bahama shipyard, exploding on impact and crashing into the ground near a junkyard.

Dr. Myles and his wife Ruth were on their way to the Global Leadership Forum hosted by the Bahamas Faith Ministries, an organization that he founded, when the crash occurred. Also with them was their daughter Charisa.

Photos taken of the crash site showed rescue workers scaling piles of debris at the Grand Bahama Shipyard which is only three miles away from the airport at Freeport.

The plane was a Lear 36 executive jet which departed the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) at the capital Nassau at around 4:07 p.m., for the Grand Bahama International Airport.

The Grand Bahama Airport Company Crash Fire Rescue Department responded to the incident, and the Police and Bahamas Air Sea Rescue (BASRA) were on the scene doing the initial investigation.

A full-scale investigation will start Monday morning at daylight. This will be conducted by the Department of Civil Aviation Aircraft Accident Investigation Prevention Unit.

The identities of the six other passengers on board have not been confirmed

Dr. Munroe, a 60-year-old Bahamas native, published more than 100 spiritual and inspirational works. According to the Bahamas Faith Ministries website, he is also a government and business consultant to Fortune 500 businesses.

In May, Dr. Munroe wrote on Twitter: "The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but its life without a purpose. ...without purpose life has no meaning."

A statement on Munroe's Facebook page said the Global Leadership Forum will continue as scheduled.

"This is what Dr. Munroe would have wanted. Please keep this family and the ministry in prayers," a spokesperson wrote.
