Sri Lanka Telecom worked with Chinese giant, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., on the new network that has the capability to transmit data at a rate of 8 terabits per second using fiber optics technology.

"As the NBN service provider, SLT has established a fiber optic network that spans over 20,000km within the country. SLT is the only ICT solutions provider with multiple global connectivity options." said Lalith De Silva, Group CEO of Sri Lanka Telecom.

"Through the company's domestic and global connectivity options, SLT provides the backbone for other operators to enhance their services to their customers."

The move marks the first step towards reengineering Sri Lanka's Information and Communications Technology Infrastructure.

"With the NBN rollout, the industry will certainly be empowered to provide high speed broadband access at affordable and competitive prices." De Silva added.

He said the new network connectivity will have a significant impact on businesses operating data centers in the country for mobile backhaul and other services.

It will empower national economic growth that will also transform the country into a "smart" nation.
