Romney Backs Minimum Wage Hike for US Workers

Minimum wage workers in the United States are getting an ally in the person of former Republication presidential candidate and former Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney, who urged fellow Republicans to support the issue on minimum wage hike.

Republicans have been opposing the move to increase the minimum wage and Romney becomes only the third GOP presidential contenders to break with the party on the issue by asking Republications to drop their opposition.

Interviewed on MNSBC's Morning Joe, Romney said the GOP has been all about more jobs in the US and better pay for workers and he stressed that the best way to show that to the Americans is to raise the minimum wage.

"I think we ought to raise it," Romney said.

He also doused off criticism that he expressed support to the minimum wage hike because he is again considering another bid in 2016. Romney said he is not interested to run for president again.

Romney became the third high profile Republican this week to announce support for a minimum wage hike. He said the continuous opposition of the GOP to the minimum wage increase has been hurting the party's image.

Last month, Tim Pawlenty, 2012 presidential contender and former Minnesota governor, said the Republicans need to support a "reasonable" increase in the wage. However, he does not support the version of the minimum wage increase legislation being pushed by the Senate Democrats and the White House.

Pawlenty said that while Republicans keep saying that they support blue-collar worker, they must also support reasonable increases in the minimum wage from time to time.

Earlier this week, another big name Republican, Rick Santorum, who was also a past presidential wannabe and former Pennsylvania senator, said the GOP's position on the minimum wage hike issue "makes no sense".

He also contended that Republicans have been known to support blue-collar workers but are going against any minimum wage increase.
