ESA Reveals First Picture of Philae Lander on Comet 67P

The European Space Agency (ESA) has released an awesome photo of the historic landing of Rosetta's Philae robotic lander on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

ESA's photo displays the comet's rocky surface and one of the lander's three feet. Philae is the first spacecraft to land on a comet. It touched down Wednesday on 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

"Rosetta's lander Philae is safely on the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko," said ESA. "One of the lander's three feet can be seen in the foreground. The image is a two-image mosaic."

Philae encountered some problems. Harpoons meant to anchor the lander to the surface failed to work properly, causing Philae to bounce twice after it landed. Scientists are still analyzing what effects the two bounces had on the spacecraft.

Though it failed to anchor to the surface, Philae's instruments did work and are transmitting images and data.

ESA seems not too worried about Philae. It said Philae's battery is functioning properly; its mass memory is "working fine" and the lander is getting some power from its solar panels.

The next mission for the ESA scientists is to find out the precise location of Philae on 67P, and its overall power and thermal situation.
