Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida says he is ready to become the next president of the United States come 2016.

The potential GOP presidential candidate told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that although he's only 42, he has been active in government service and held public office for about 14 years.

Rubio has had a falling out with his party's more right-wing members but has remained an active potential contender for the Republican Party's presidential nomination.

During the interview, Rubio said he will not seek re-election to the Senate if he decides to run for president in 2016.

"You don't run for president with some eject button in the cockpit that allows you to go on an exit ramp if it doesn't work out," Rubio said during the interview.

Rubio stressed that even if he's just turning 43 this month, he has extensive experience serving the public and referred to his 14 years in Florida's legislature.

He told ABC that a president needs to have "a clear vision of where the country needs to go and clear ideas about how to get it there."

Rubio is seen by many as a dynamic political figure who swept into the Senate during the 2010 midterm elections. Since then, he emerged as the Republican Party's voice in Congress. Rubio was, at the time, considered a viable presidential candidate in 2012.

Rubio is one among several potential GOP presidential candidates in 2016. He stands toe-to-toe with other presidential hopefuls such as Gov. Chris Christie (NJ), Gov. Jeb Bush (FL) and another Congress freshman, Sen. Rand Paul (KY).

In New Hampshire, Rubio also took a jab at former Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton who is considered as the overwhelming favorite to win the Democratic Primaries if she chooses to run.

He said that nominating someone like Clinton is the same as taking the country back to the past, which is an era that will never come back. Rubio said Clinton never had a passing grade when she worked as secretary of state to President Barack Obama.
