Former professional road racing cyclist, Lance Armstrong, recently shifted gears and tried his hand at running the Beer Mile. However, he was not as successful as he was on his bike and ended up dropping out and failing the course.

The Beer Mile is a competition that combines running and speed drinking. As is the standard practice, the race takes place on a standard 400 meter of a quarter of a mile running track.

The race begins at the 1-mile line with the consumption of a standard amount of beer, followed by another lap around the track, and more beer. The competition continually alternates between running and drinking.

With the inaugural Flo Beer Mile World Championships only two weeks away, the event has been amassing considerable interest, especially in Austin, Texas, as they will be hosting the event.

Armstrong, one of the most famous residents in Austin, recently decided to try out the event for himself.

Jack Murray of Jack & Adam's Bicycles told Flotrack that he thought Armstrong had a shot at breaking an age-group record. Now at 43-years old, Armstrong would have needed to break 5:51 to set a "super master" or 40 and above record.

However, it simply was not meant to be, as Armstrong's attempt was short-lived.

After he chugged a beer, he ran one lap and was visibly behind the lap leaders. After stopping for his second beer, he then dropped out. In the video of the time trial, he was overheard saying the experience was something he did not expect.

Fellow competitor Patrick Hitchins - who placed second with 6:08 - told the Texas Running Post that Armstrong drank Budweiser from a 12 ounce can, no widemouth, following strict international beer mile standards.

"Perhaps his days with Michelob Ultra Lite put him at a disadvantage," Hitchins said of the banned cyclist.

Hitchins is hoping that he will get the chance to compete with Lance Armstrong again in the next Beer Mile.
