New Honda Hydrogen Fuel-Cell FCEV Concept Car Makes its Debut; Car and Generator in One

Honda has introduced its new hydrogen fuel-cell scheduled for release in 2016. The Honda FCV concept car is intended to replace the current FCX Clarity, which is also a hydrogen fuel cell car, Car Advice reports.

According to Honda, the new FCEV has a hydrogen fuel cell unit that is a 33 percent smaller than that of the FCX Clarity. The new Honda hydrogen fuel cell stack can produce around 100kW of power and at least 3.1 kW per liter of output density.

Refueling can take at least three minutes, according to Honda. The FCEV at full capacity has a range of around 700 kilometers. In contrast, the FCX Clarity has a range of 620 kilometers.

The Honda FCEV concept car will be released in Japan by March 2016 and will probably be released at a few locations in the United States and Europe.

It took Honda 20 years to research and to develop an independent fuel cell car, Car and Driver reports. The FCEV concept car is actually the third hydrogen fuel cell powered car produced by Honda.

If it's going to be released in the United States, the car will most likely make its appearance in California. It's also expected to go head-to-head with Toyota's hydrogen fuel-cell car, Mirai, which is scheduled for worldwide release in 2015.

A lack of infrastructure could be one critical problem why the new Honda FCEV hydrogen fuel cell powered car might not be a vehicle many would like to have. Both Honda and Toyota hydrogen fuel cell cars will need a specially designed filling station.

In order for the Honda FCEV concept car to be available for long driving trips, Honda will need to build a network filling station across the U.S. Without a network of such stations, the FCEV will only be driven on short commute trips.

The Honda FCEV does have an edge over its competitors -it's also a generator. Honda will include a generator unit that will light and power your house in case of power outages caused by earthquakes or other similar disasters.
